This month, we’re thrilled to highlight three incredible crew members: Josabeth, Ruddy, and Maikel. Each are dedicated members of our team who serve aboard the Tropic Fly and Super Fly. They all share a deep passion for their work and the sea, making sure every client gets the incredible fishing experience that can only be found in these waters with the crews on these boats.

Meet Josita

Tropic Fly | Second Mate

Josita, Second Mate on the Tropic Fly

Josabeth, affectionately known as "Josita" aboard the Tropic Fly, has been working at sea for two years and serves as Second Mate with Maverick—a company she's long admired for being "so solid and active in the sportfishing industry." Her background in sportfishing runs deep, having worked on several sportfishing boats before joining Maverick. Among her many experiences at sea, one stands out above the rest: winning the IGFA 'Fisherwoman of the Year' award at the 2025 Pescadora Tournament, a milestone that reflects her dedication and skill in the field.

Onboard, Josita thrives on creating memorable experiences for clients. "I really enjoy interacting with clients, showing them every part of the boat, and making them feel part of the experience," she explains. She considers herself particularly skilled at hooking fish—a talent that was put to the test during a memorable outing in Carrillo, Guanacaste, where she hooked a cubera snapper weighing around 60 pounds. "It was thrilling!" she recalls. When conditions turn challenging, Josita maintains her composure by staying calm and following the boat's safety protocols. Her qualifications include the 'Zafarrancho' safety certification, and she's both a graduate and instructor at the Women's Nautical School.

As a teammate, Josita describes herself as "proactive, energetic, charismatic, helpful, and very sociable." She believes that communication is the foundation of everything when it comes to crew collaboration, and she prefers an atmosphere that balances fun with precision under pressure. A definite morning person, Josita starts each day with positive affirmations that she repeats throughout the day. What keeps her motivated during long workdays? "Constantly thinking that a bigger catch is coming." While she's always eager to learn and improve—particularly hoping to fish with the level of professionalism Maverick is known for—she also values her downtime, spending it with her family and dogs or casting from the beach. Before heading out to sea, she has one simple ritual: praying and entrusting herself to God. If given the chance to sail anywhere in the world, she would choose Cape Verde.

Meet Ruddy

Tropic Fly | First Mate

Ruddy aka"Rudboy,” First Mate on the Tropic Fly

Ruddy, known onboard as "Rudboy," serves as First Mate on the Tropic Fly and jas been working on the sea for over 10 seasons. His path to Maverick was driven by admiration for the company's reputation. "It goes without saying—this is the best sportfishing company I've ever seen, and I think anyone would love to be part of it!" he says. Before joining Maverick, Ruddy worked on sportfishing yachts and catamarans, building a solid foundation in the industry.

Among his many memorable experiences at sea, Ruddy's personal record stands out: catching a 220-pound tuna. More recently, in 2025, he had an exceptional season with 34 sails, 2 blue marlins, and 1 striped marlin. Onboard, he finds joy in three particular tasks: "waiting for the bite, interacting with people, and staying attentive to cleanliness." He has a special affinity for both hooking and releasing fish, skills that require precision and care. When faced with bad weather or emergency situations, Ruddy's approach is straightforward: "It depends on the situation, but the main thing is always to stay calm." He holds the Zafarrancho safety certification and understands that effective crew dynamics depend on following the captain's lead, avoiding contradictions, sharing ideas, and working as a true team.

Ruddy describes himself as "very approachable, polite, and calm," and his love for the ocean keeps him motivated through long workdays. "I love the ocean and everything related to it—I never get bored!" he explains. He prefers a professional yet relaxed atmosphere onboard and is very much a morning person. His routine before heading out to sea is simple: "Just God with me," and he always prays for himself and everyone onboard. Looking ahead, Ruddy has aspirations like many crew members: "I'd love to become a captain someday—everything in its time." When he's not at sea, he dedicates his time completely to his son. If given the choice to sail anywhere in the world, Ruddy would choose Portugal, specifically Cape Verde.

Maikel, Second Mate on Super Fly

Meet Maikel

Super Fly | Second Mate

Maikel brings 18 years of experience to his role as Second Mate on the Super Fly, having spent his entire career on sportfishing boats. His decision to join Maverick was driven by a simple philosophy: "Because it's the best charter operation, and I like to be where the best are." Throughout nearly two decades at sea, Maikel has accumulated countless memorable experiences, but one stands out above the rest. "Seeing clients' happiness when they catch the fish they've always dreamed of—that's one of the best," he reflects. In a particularly remarkable day on the water, his crew caught over 22 different species in a single outing.

Onboard, Maikel takes special pride in maintenance work. "I like the boat I'm on to always look clean and presentable," he explains. His specialty is hooking fish, a skill honed over years of practice. When challenging conditions arise, Maikel's approach is methodical: keeping clients calm and executing the pre-established safety plan for each possible scenario. His qualifications include an international captain's license and a basic seafaring course, credentials that reflect his commitment to professional seamanship. He believes that for a crew to work well together, "everyone knows each other's strengths and weaknesses, follows the captain's directions, and stays humble enough to accept corrections." While working with Maverick, he's eager to continue developing his skills in customer service and logistics.

As a teammate, Maikel describes himself as "attentive, empathetic, and always willing to learn." He stays motivated during long workdays by putting himself in the clients' shoes and fishing as if it were a fun day out. While professionalism is his priority, he's learned that "good music and some fun can turn a tough fishing day into a great one." A morning person by nature, Maikel makes it a point to always bring good energy to the sea, and he keeps a few lucky charms with him before heading out. When he's not at sea, he continues his passion for fishing and serves in a Christian youth group. If given the opportunity to sail anywhere in the world, his choice is clear: "Definitely Cocos Island—it's been a dream of mine since childhood."
