The boat that helped launch the Maverick legacy in Costa Rica.

A proven charter platform, tournament competitor, and one of the most recognizable sportfishing boats on the Pacific coast. Price available upon request.

‍Some boats are built to fish. Others build a reputation. ‍

Spanish Fly, the 42' custom Maverick sportfisher, is now offered for sale. Built in Costa Rica in 2003, she is the original boat behind the Maverick story and one of the most accomplished charter vessels to operate out of Los Sueños Marina.

For a buyer looking to enter or expand within the sportfishing charter market, she is a rare combination: a proven offshore platform, international name recognition, an exceptional fishing record, extensive upgrades, and more than two decades of charter and tournament history.

‍ ‍

Very few boats anywhere can offer a history or reputation of world class fishing like the Spanish Fly.

The boat that started the Maverick story‍ ‍

Spanish Fly was commissioned by Richard "Bim" Lebo and designed by Steve French. She entered Pacific waters in 2003, as the original operation moved from Quepos to the developing Los Sueños Marina.

Her performance helped establish the reputation of Maverick Yachts Costa Rica and led directly to the larger fleet known throughout the sportfishing world as the Fly Boats. The success of this one vessel proved the strength, fishability, and charter potential of the custom Maverick design.

She is not simply another used sportfisher. She is a piece of Costa Rican sportfishing history that happens to be for sale.

Tournament-tested performance

Spanish Fly built her reputation competing throughout Central America — Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, and El Salvador. She placed consistently in major events and won the overall Los Sueños tournament series title in 2006.

Her fishing record includes:‍ ‍

  • More than 10,000 documented billfish releases

  • A best charter day of 47 sailfish

  • 24 blue marlin in a single day at the offshore seamounts

  • Numerous tournament wins and top finishes across Central America

  • More than two decades operating in one of the world's leading billfish destinations‍ ‍

Her large cockpit, maneuverability, and ability to raise fish earned her a reputation as one of the most effective charter boats in the region.

A unique place in sportfishing history‍ ‍

An extremely rare catch: leucistic blue marlin, March 2014

In March 2014, angler Karen Weaver fought and released an exceptionally rare, nearly white blue marlin aboard Spanish Fly. First described as albino, the fish was later identified as leucistic, having retained some pigmentation in its eyes and fins.

The encounter drew international attention and remains one of the defining stories in the boat's history. Members of that crew still fish out of Los Sueños today, now aboard Southern Fly.

Built in Costa Rica for serious offshore fishing ‍

Spanish Fly is a custom flybridge sportfisher built from Costa Rican laurel blanco, with traditional teak, mahogany, and other fine wood finishes.

‍ ‍

Her cold-molded wooden construction was chosen for strength, durability, serviceability, and a smooth ride. She was designed around the demands of a busy charter program, with removable interior components and practical access to the mechanical areas that need it.

The result combines classic custom craftsmanship with the functionality required for daily offshore work.

Extensive refit and modern upgrades

Spanish Fly has been through several major refits across her working life:

  • Recently overhauled twin Cummins QSC 500 HP diesel engines

  • Seakeeper gyro stabilization

  • Updated Garmin marine electronics

  • Awlgrip exterior finish

  • Updated teak deck and covering boards

  • Mezzanine seating

  • Generator

  • Updated interior and mechanical systems

  • Custom offshore fishing equipment

Engine hours, service records, refit documentation, and equipment inventory are available for verification by prospective buyers.
